Cucumis sativus is the scientific name for cucumber, which is an annual climbing plant from the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). This plant has the following characteristics: soft, juicy, flat, hairy stems, and spiral-shaped tendrils for climbing. Large, heart-shaped leaves with pointed tips. Trumpet-shaped flowers, yellow in color, with five petals. Taproot with root hairs. And the fruit is green with yellowish-white stripes, and has an elongated cylindrical shape. This plant can grow in temperate to tropical climates at altitudes up to 2,000 meters above sea level with moist soil conditions and rich in organic matter. Cucumber fruit has several benefits, including; in Kalimantan, cucumber fruit is used as one of the ingredients in the oiling process (Ngaos), and in Bali, cucumber fruit, besides being eaten directly, is usually used for offerings or banten.

Cucumis sativus adalah nama ilmiah untuk mentimun, yaitu tanaman merambat semusim dari keluarga labu-labuan (Cucurbitaceae). Tanaman ini memiliki ciri-ciri yaitu; batang lunak berair, pipih, berbulu halus, dan sulur berbentuk pilin untuk memanjat. Daun berukuran besar, berbentuk jantung, berujung runcing. Bunga berbentuk terompet, berwarna kuning, dengan lima helai mahkota bunga. Akar tunggang dengan bulu bulu akar. Dan buah berwarna hijau dengan garis-garis putih kekuningan, dan berbentuk silinder memanjang. Tanaman ini dapat tumbuh di daerah beriklim sedang hingga daerah beriklim tropis pada ketinggian sampai 2.000 mdpl dengan kondisi tanah yang lembab dan kaya akan bahan organik. Buah mentimun memiliki beberapa manfaat diantaranya yaitu; di Kalimantan buah mentimun digunakan untuk salah satu bahan proses peminyakan (Ngaos), dan di Bali buah mentimun selain bisa dimakan langsung, buah ini biasanya digunakan untuk sesajen atau banten.
