The Candlenut (Aleurites moluccana), is a flowering tree in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae, also known as Candleberry, Indian walnut, Kemiri, Varnish tree, Nuez de la India or Kukui nut tree. (Wikipedia) Its native range is impossible to establish precisely because of early spread by humans, and the tree is now distributed throughout the New and Old World tropics. It grows to a height of 15Ð25 m (49Ð82 ft), with wide spreading or pendulous branches. The leaves are pale green, simple and ovate, or trilobed or rarely 5-lobed, with an acute apex, 10Ð20 cm (3.9Ð7.9 in) long. The nut is round, 4Ð6 cm (1.6Ð2.4 in) in diameter; the seed inside has a very hard seed coat and a high oil content, which allows its use as a candle, hence its name. (Wikipedia)
Kemiri (Aleurites moluccana), adalah tumbuhan yang bijinya dimanfaatkan sebagai sumber minyak dan rempah-rempah. Tumbuhan ini masih sekerabat dengan singkong dan termasuk dalam suku Euphorbiaceae. Dalam perdagangan antarnegara dikenal sebagai candleberry, Indian walnut, serta candlenut. Pohonnya disebut sebagai varnish tree atau kukui nut tree. Minyak yang diekstrak dari bijinya berguna dalam industri untuk digunakan sebagai bahan campuran cat dan dikenal sebagai tung oil. (Wikipedia.id) Tanaman ini sekarang sudah tersebar luas di daerah-daerah tropis. Tinggi tanaman ini mencapai sekitar 15-25 meter. Daunnya berwarna hijau pucat. Kacangnya memiliki diameter sekitar 4Ð6 cm; Biji yang terdapat di dalamnya memiliki lapisan pelindung yang sangat keras dan mengandung minyak yang cukup banyak, yang memungkinkan untuk digunakan sebagai lilin.
