The areca nut (Areca catechu) is a tropical palm tree belonging to the palm family. This plant has fibrous roots and can grow to a height of 15-20 meters, with a cylindrical trunk that extends vertically upwards without branches and a diameter of 15-25 cm. Its leaves are pinnately compound and up to 1.5 meters long, green when young and turning reddish-brown as they mature. Areca nuts are ovoid or oval and grow in clusters. Young areca nuts are usually green and, when ripe, turn yellow or reddish-orange.
The areca nut tree has many uses, as almost every part of the plant can be utilized. The fruit is edible, along with betel leaves and lime; the trunk is used as a traditional building material in Bali; and the leaves are used for roofing in traditional houses.The areca nut (Areca catechu) is a tropical palm tree, and in each region of Indonesia, it has different local names, such as Pinang in Java, Puah in Boti, and Buah in Bali. Therefore, the areca nut tree is well-known among the people because of its many uses.
Pohon pinang (Areca catechu) merupakan tanaman palma tropis yang masuk ke dalam jenis palem palemaan. Tanaman ini memiliki akar serabut, dan mampu tumbuh hingga ketinggian 15-20 meter dengan bentuk batang silindris tegak lurus keatas tanpa cabang dengan diameter 15-25 cm. Daunya berbentuk menyirip majemuk dan memiliki panjang hingga 1,5 meter, berwarna hijau ketika masih mudah dan akan berubah menjadi merah kecokelatan ketika sudah tua. Buah pinang berbentuk bulat telur atau oval dan tumbuh dalam satu rumpun, dan biasanya buah pinang yang masih muda akan bewarna hijau dan ketika sudah matang akan berubah warna menjadi kuning atau jingga kemerahan.
Pohon pinang memiliki banyak kegunaan bagi masyarakat. Karena hampir semua bagian tanaman ini dapat dimanfaatkan. Mulai dari buahnya dapat dimakan bersama daun sirih dan kapur, batangnya bisa dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan bangunan tradisional di Bali, dan daunya bisa dijadikan atap untuk rumah tradisional. Pohon pinang (Areca catechu) merupakan tanaman palma tropis, dan disetiap daerah di Indonesia, pohon ini memiliki nama atau sebutan lokal yang berbeda seperti di Jawa disebut Pinang, di daerah Boti disebut puah, dan di Bali tanaman ini disebut Buah. Sehingga pohon pinang sangat dikenal oleh Masyarakat karena tanaman ini memiliki banyak kegunaan.
